The Story Behind the Book

Robert Kiyosaki grew up with two father figures who shaped his entire view of money. His biological father — his 'poor dad' — was a highly educated government employee who believed the path to security was a stable job and a good degree. His best friend Mike's father — his 'rich dad' — had barely finished eighth grade but built a business empire through self-education and investing.

Kiyosaki uses these two men not as villains and heroes, but as contrasting philosophies. Poor Dad said things like 'I can't afford it.' Rich Dad asked, 'How can I afford it?' The difference seems small, but it reveals two completely different mental habits: one that closes down thinking and one that opens it up.

The book's central argument is that what you believe about money determines your financial destiny far more than your income, your education, or your circumstances.

"The poor and the middle class work for money. The rich have money work for them."
