Why Criticism Always Backfires

Dale Carnegie opens with a striking claim: criticism doesn't work. When we criticize people, we wound their pride and spark resentment — but we almost never change their behavior. Criminals, he notes, rarely blame themselves; they rationalize their actions no matter what. This is human nature.

Criticism puts people on the defensive. It makes them justify themselves rather than reflect honestly. Even when criticism is completely accurate and well-intentioned, the person on the receiving end typically feels attacked, not enlightened.

Carnegie's first principle flows from this: instead of condemning people, try to understand them. Ask yourself why they did what they did. Empathy costs nothing and opens doors that criticism slams shut.

"Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain — and most fools do."
